
BRO-SIS staged a free charity event at Birmingham's Handsworth Park on Sunday 27th August 2006 with the wondrous sounds of Reggae, Gospel, R n B and Hip-Hop, and staged musical performances by local and national Black British artists - and world renowned DJs. The event also included children's activities and entertainment, art displays and the finest Caribbean cuisine to complete the festive atmosphere!
BRO-SIS, who is sponsored by Channel 4, were particularly pleased to have at the event world-class cricketers, including Sir Vivian Richards, Wasim Akram and Clive Lloyd, who entertained the crowd with a special guest starred cricket match and also a meet and greet with the crowd to give incentives about the positive image of multicultural sport in Britain. The Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress were also in attendance.
Amongst the celebration BRO-SIS promoted its holistic work support to young people and adults which tackles the issues in areas such as HIV/AIDS, Sexual Health, Substance Misuse, and Criminal Justice Interventions within the African Caribbean Community in Birmingham. Free condoms and culturally sensitive information packs were distributed along with hundreds of prizes and giveaways. There were also be various stalls providing information and advice on employment, crime and education, from exhibitors like Job Centre Plus, Connexions and West Midlands Police.
BRO-SIS Manager Terence Wallen is clear about the significance of the event, now in its second year. "The Caribbean community in Birmingham is large, vibrant and proud, with huge amounts of creativity - but it often lacks a platform to share and celebrate this. Party Inna Di Park, has been a fantastic opportunity for people of all backgrounds and ages to meet famous names in sport and entertainment and soak up the buzzing atmosphere, whilst recognising the talents and energy of the Caribbean community."
